Messukeskus Helsinki: the Responsible Venue

The Messukeskus Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre continues to develop its responsibility strategy by reducing energy consumption, using more renewable energy, and paying attention to making environmentally responsible acquisitions. Currently, Messukeskus Helsinki recycles 99% of its waste.

The key environmental goals are cutting energy consumption, recycling, and minimising waste, including food waste.  Messukeskus also expects all of its partners to act responsibly and commit to the company’s environmental management system.

In the summer of 2019, one of the largest solar power stations in Helsinki will be built on the roof of the Messukeskus buildings. Messukeskus Helsinki will use more renewable energy and reduce its energy consumption by covering the roofs of its buildings with more than 2,000 solar panels, which will generate approximately 592 MWh of energy annually. Messukeskus has also heavily invested in the development of services for electric-car drivers, by increasing the number of charging points suitable for all-electric cars.

Last year, Messukeskus was given honourable mention for its commendable long-term efforts and commitment to the Energy Efficiency Agreement for Industries in 2008-2016. The new energy-efficiency programme, extending to 2025, seeks savings of 7.5% in energy consumption. The interim target set for 2020 is energy savings of 4%.

The various restaurants at Messukeskus favour local food and organic products. Respect for top quality while minimising food waste is an important starting point for the restaurants.
Corporate responsibility is another one of the key values at Messukeskus. This comprises responsibility for people, the economy and the environment. Messukeskus is the only Finnish event organiser to be granted an ISO14001 2015 environmental management certificate and an ISO9001 2015 management system certificate. The meeting rooms at Messukeskus are included in the Sustainable Scandinavian Meetings Region of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

Finally, Messukeskus works hard to provide easy access for every one of its customers. All entrances and premises at Messukeskus are easily accessible. All floors can be accessed by lift and most of the restaurants at Messukeskus also provide easy access. It is important to support people with disabilities and make their participation in events as easy as possible. This is why Messukeskus provides special services for customers holding an EU Disability Card.
